What we do

Product Lab is a hands-on product management program for UNC students who want to build something real.

Why it exists

  • UNC has never had a dedicated space for students interested in product management. This is it.
  • A small, hands-on group where you turn a vague idea into a real plan, with a PM helping every week, and finish with a site to show for it.

How it runs

  • One hour a week: quick framing, 30 minutes with a guest PM, then that week's homework.
  • Each week builds directly on the last.
Curriculum

Six weeks, one project

Every week moves the same project forward one step. Full deliverables and homework are shared with the cohort.

What is PM and finding a real problem

Skill: problem definition (real pain versus an imagined feature)
Week 2

User research & synthesis

Skill: talking to users, and pulling insight out of noise
Week 3

Prioritization, scoping, & iteration

Skill: MVP thinking (deciding what to build first and why)
Week 4

Writing the PRD

Skill: the spec (success metrics, edge cases, and scope)
Week 5 · Capstone

Build and test

Skill: turning a PRD into a working prototype, and getting real user signal on it
Week 6 · Bonus

Package it: build a portfolio site

Skill: the packaging layer so your work goes somewhere to be seen
